Rolwaling is a remote mountain valley situated in the north east of Kathmandu and to the west of  the Khumbu region. The valley is situated at an altitude of 4000m above sea level and bordered with Tibet to the north. In the Tibetan language ‘Rolwa’ means ‘furrow’ and ‘ling’ means ‘place’. It is mentioned in the Pema Kathang by Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Urgen Rinpoche) that Rolwaling is a beyul, a sacred hidden valley, carved out with one stroke of his plow.

Rolwaling Sangag Choling Monastery School, being the spiritual center of Rolwaling, has the main responsibility to preserve the spiritual tradition in this sacred valley. In addition, the monastery also undertakes various project activities that are necessary to benefit the villagers, visitors etc. The monastery takes continued initiatives in the areas of education, health and environment.

Preserving free schooling in the Rolwaling Valley in Nepal is preserving a culture and its values. The values from this remote community are not only fundamental for this village to continue thriving but they are also fundamental for the world to evolve.
